To Thine Own Self Be True

His text came out of the blue: Are you free Thursday evening and a fan of theatre?

Free: yes. Fan of sender: yes. Feelings about theatre therefore entirely irrelevant.

I was seated in the second row, playing the challenging part of Friend/Date amidst a sea of loved-up couples. Every now and again I glanced over at my companion to find him (hold onto your seats, folks) watching the play. An encouraging sign, since they say opposites attract.

As we were leaving, he mentioned something about a French art-house film he wanted to see.  A Meatloaf lyric came to mind: I would do anything for love, but I won’t do that.
